All agents have to be licensed and certified to sell their products. Above and beyond that, here are five things you should be sure to look for when researching an insurance agent who will be your #1 go-to for your insurance questions and needs:
  1. Find an insurance agent who is an expert. Your agent should be able to answer your questions or be able to refer to sources to find the answers quickly so you can make informed, comfortable decisions without feeling rushed.
  1. A great agent searches every year to find the plan that works best with your prescriptions. He or she compares your drugs with formularies to make sure that if your current plan has made changes, you can cross-shop it with other plans in order to find the right fit for you. It is important to check every single year to avoid expensive surprises!
  1. You should feel great about your agent. When friends and family talk about problems with their insurance coverage, your agent should spring to mind as the solution. If not, find an insurance agent who is better-informed, better-qualified, and strives to understand your needs and provide the best products available.
  1. He or she should represent more than one plan for any given category. If an agent only has one tool in the toolbox, you can’t know if it really is the right plan for you. It could be a sign of a lack of commitment from the agent, as representing more products takes time and effort on the part of the agent. Find an insurance agent who has options for you no matter what type of product you are looking at.
  1. Great brokers are always learning and training. The more committed they are to being a well-informed agent, the better. Ask yours whether or not additional certifications and trainings have been completed on top of basic licensure.

If your agent has these five attributes, chances are you’re a happy customer. You deserve a great experience when it comes to searching for and maintaining the right insurance coverage for you!
