WHAT'S WAPPENING?

Five Compelling Examples That Show You’re Never Too Old to Start Something New

never-too-old

Visiting my grandmother in rural Idaho when I was 17, she invited me out for a morning walk. Several miles later, she was in her rhythm and nearly running while I was tired and my feet hurt. I couldn’t believe her capacity for movement, and she was over 70 at the time! That got me thinking, who else is staying active and surprising themselves and others even as they age?

I was truly amazed to find the story of Fauja Singh. He started running seriously at the age of 89, and he now holds marathon records for the 90+ age group. He is also the first person over age 100 to run a marathon. Speaking to The Indian Express, Singh said, “The first 20 miles are not difficult. As for last six miles, I run while talking to God.”

He avoids fried foods and eats mostly lentils with flatbread, yogurt and milk.

And he’s not the only one doing amazing things at an advanced age. Here are other great examples of men and women following their dreams as octogenarians, nonagenarians, and centenarians:

  • Smoky Dawson, an Australian, released an original album of country songs at the age of 92.
  • Leila Denmark, an American, continued as a practicing pediatrician until the age of 103.
  • Tamae Watanabe from Japan is the oldest woman to climb Mount Everest at age 73.
  • And Sister Madonna Buder from Missouri, also known as “The Iron Nun”, is still competing in Ironman triathlons at the age of 86. Click the video below to see more about her story:
